Just got back from an adventure-filled trip to Japan with my family, which included a visit to the Nojima Fault Preservation Museum within the Hokudan Earthquake Memorial Park on Awaji Island. We had the chance to see the spectacular fault scarps and trench exposures of the surface rupture associated with the 1995 magnitude (Mw) 6.9 Great Hanshin (Kobe) Earthquake, as well as simulations of the devastating effects of the earthquake on infrastructure. Walking through the museum, I was struck by a profound feeling of awe and was reminded of the importance of the contribution that we earthquake geologists can make to help mitigate such disasters. With me was my tiny field "desistant", Oliver Rimando. 😅
